Semester: Spring 2013
Credits: 3
Students will explore the rich history underlying the Olympic Games, organized sport, and their impact on individuals and on communities. During travel, students will gain unparalleled access to sport, tourism, and health organizations, agencies, and museums under the guidance of Dr. Kiki Kaplanidou, Dr. Paula Welch, and Dr. Barbara Rienzo.

“Athletic Medicine: Discoveries Influencing Clinical Practice” will cultivate critical thinking and promote a better understanding of how doctors and their discoveries impact modern clinical sports medicine. During travel (June 2- 14, 2011) students will visit medical and science museums and university research labs dedicated to evolution of Sports Medicine under the guidance of Athletic Training faculty. This course is open to all students, but is especially appropriate for Athletic Training, Pre-Medicine, Pre-Physical Therapy, Pre-Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Science students who are in good academic standing (junior or higher). Students must have completed APK 2100c (or equivalent) and must submit an academic letter of recommendation for instructor approval.

This program focuses on urban sustainability in/around Sydney, Australia. Topics include urban planning and development (including energy conservation and climate, housing, and transportation), conservation of natural resources for human use (tourism, recreation, and agriculture), and indigenous/social change. These issues are examined through educational travel (field trips and activities), a service learning project, classroom presentations and seminars, and field modules. As home to nearly a quarter of Australia’s population, and students will explore the cultural diversity of this metropolis, the management and conservation of protected areas for nature-based recreation and tourism, and the impact of humans on an urban environment (including topics such as energy conservation, carbon emissions and climate change, and water conservation).
