Observational Opportunities

Pre-Athletic Training Student Information

Below are the expected learning outcomes for the pre-athletic training students’ observational experience. At the conclusion of the observational experience (regardless of where observation hours were completed), students should be able to:

  1. Define the domains of Athletic Training
  2. Recognize the importance of an Emergency Action Plan
  3. Recognize the importance of confidentiality and communication with athletes, coaches, parents, and other sports medicine professionals
  4. Comply with OSHA and Bloodborne Pathogen (BBP) regulations specific to the Athletic Training setting
  5. Comply with HIPAA and confidentiality regulations specific to the Athletic Training setting
  6. Recall basic anatomy, specifically for the musculoskeletal system
  7. Obtain basic understanding of common medical terminology
  8. Identify the role of a Certified Athletic Trainer as part of the Sports Medicine Team in various settings (i.e., Collegiate, High School, etc)

All pre-AT students (native UF and transfer students) must complete Bloodborne Pathogen Training prior to any pre-AT observation experience.  A free course is available through the UF Environmental Health and Safety office – Training for BBP (UF_EHS850C – Clinical Audience) via the “myTraining” site. Students will receive a certificate upon completion, which will serve as validation of course completion to begin pre-AT observation experiences. Please verify the expiration date for the training and ensure you have a current BBP certificate through the year (training is typically valid for 1-year). All pre-AT students (native UF and transfer students) must complete HIPAA and Confidentiality Training offered via “myTraining” and accessible via the UF Privacy Office website.  Please access the Confidentiality (health) Statement information via the left-hand menu of the Privacy website for instructions. Pre-AT students must provide a copy of the HIPAA certificate and signed Confidentiality (health) statement prior to completing pre-AT Observation hours.  Important note: HIPAA and Confidentiality training expires December 31st annually so you will need to renew in January of the application year; all students should have training current through the application year.

Observation Experiences

Below is a list of Athletic Trainers that are willing to host pre-athletic training students interested in observation experiences. As a pre-athletic training student, you are not required to complete your observation experience with anyone on this list, but you must obtain a minimum of 100 hours of observation under a Certified Athletic Trainer as part of the Application/Portfolio Process for Admission into the CAATE Accredited Undergraduate Athletic Training Education Program. The observational experiences must be documented on the “Observation Experience Documentation Form” (available from Ms. Lori Gibbs lgibbs@hhp.ufl.edu). The Observation Experience Documentation Form requires the signature, Board of Certification number and Licensure number of the Certified Athletic Trainer supervising the experience.

Please Note: Opportunities at the University Athletic Association (UAA) Inc. and RecSports are reserved for pre-athletic training students currently enrolled at the University of Florida only. Please inquire about requirements for opportunities with UAA or RecSports directly.

Some of the sites listed below may require their own application process and/or expenses that are independent of those of the Athletic Training Education Program Application/Portfolio Process.
